Walter Herron Buchanan

According to the 1930 Curry County New Mexico census, Walter Buchanan's family had all moved out, and his wife had died. He took in boarders and had a nephew staying with him. The boarders were O.S. Little, 37, who worked for the railroad as a machinist, Little's wife Effie, 28, their children, Velma Ruth, 10, Gladys Marie, 7 and Roy Lee, 3. Walter's nephew was W. A. Buchanan, 22, from Arkansas, who was staying with him while attending school, U of A (University of Arizona?).

Listed in the 1910 Bell County, Texas census along with the Crawford family was Morthy Barkley, a 51 year-old black female servant. She was born in Arkansas and her occupation was listed as Dwelling house Laborer.

The 1900 Madison County, Texas federal census shows a Martha M Phillips, born in September 1848 in Alabama, residing in Samuel Buchanan's household. She is listed as a sister-in-law. Also listed is a nephew, William Causty(?), born in January 1883 in Texas.

Sidney Kirk Curnutt
1921 - 2004
Sidney Kirk Curnutt, 83, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at his home. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at United Methodist Church in Sabula, Iowa, with the Rev. Karl Goodfellow and Pastor Michael Jones officiating. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula, will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. Memorials may be given to the charity of choice in Sidney's name.
Sidney was born Tuesday, March 15, 1921, in Asher, Okla., to Milton and Floney (Gibbs) Curnutt. He married Sandra Sandholdt on May 10, 1958, at United Methodist Church in Sabula.
During Sidney's youth, he worked for Civilian Conservation Corps until he started his military service. In 1939, Sidney joined the United States Army, serving in the Company L, 27th Infantry, 25th Division. He then attended and graduated from Officers Candidate School at Fort Riley Military Base in Fort Riley, Kan. During his military career, Sidney served 20 years active service, attaining the rank of Major and 20 years in the Army Civil Service. During his active service, Sidney survived the Pearl Harbor invasion and went on to serve in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. In his 40-year career, he was assigned to installations in Hawaii, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Fort Ord, Calif., Fifth Army Headquarters, Chicago, Vietnam, Germany, France, Savanna, Ill., Joliet, Ill., Albuquerque, N.M., and Okinawa, Japan. Upon retirement, Sidney spent 20 years as a tax preparer for Schoenthaler Law Offices, Maquoketa. He was also was a member of Maquoketa Masonic Lodge.
Sidney will be deeply missed by his wife, Sandra; one son, Donald (Linda) Denton, of Henryetta, Okla.; four daughters, Mary Alice Ackley, of Fairfield, Conn., Louise (Richard) Higgs, of Tulsa, Okla., Audrey (Bob) Winegar, of Maquoketa, and Michelle (Dave Jr.) Hurla, of Clinton, Iowa; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one brother, James Curnutt, of Marietta, Okla. His parents, one brother and three sisters preceded Sidney in death.
